Since 1951, the Institut Français du Design has been recognizing the achievements of companies and local authorities that have adopted a sustainable approach to progress in the service of "the Person, the Economy and the City" through its fundamental criteria, the 5Es: Economy, Ergonomics, Aesthetics, Ethics, Emotion. Its work is based on 3 main pillars: the Observatory, the Conservatory and the Laboratory.
To promote and showcase exemplary design achievements, JANUS label jurors (the official design label stemming from the ministerial decree of November 13, 1953) and the Prix de l'Institut Français du Design, assess outstanding products, services and spaces that represent an eloquent synthesis of functional, aesthetic and ethical criteria, at the crossroads of economics and the human sciences: the JANUS 5E label. The JANUS jury selects projects that emphasize innovative use and respect for the user and the environment.
Le Conservatoire du Design et de la Marque I Centre National des Archives du design à la française s mission is to archive, publish and exhibit the history of design and creative entrepreneurs. Visit to extend its reach to the general public, professionals and the research community, the Institut product exhibitions that promote and disseminate a culture of innovation and creativity.
To encourage student designers to ask questions about tomorrow's world, IFD organizes the following projects forward-looking research, with the help of photographs EXPLORE l Outside the box (8 competitions held since 2016), (designing new ways of interacting with digital technology), and Invisible Cities the JANUS de l'Etudiant.
