Depuis 1951, l’institut français du design valorise les réalisations des entreprises et des collectivités qui s’inscrivent durablement dans une démarche de progrès au service de «la Personne, de l’Économie et de la Cité» à travers ses critères fondamentaux, les 5E : Économie, Ergonomie, Esthétique, Éthique, Émotion. Son action repose sur 3 grands piliers : l’Observatoire, le Conservatoire et le Laboratoire.

the Observatory

To promote and showcase exemplary design achievements, JANUS label jurors (the official design label stemming from the ministerial decree of November 13, 1953) and the Prix de l'Institut Français du Design, assess outstanding products, services and spaces that represent an eloquent synthesis of functional, aesthetic and ethical criteria, at the crossroads of economics and the human sciences: the JANUS 5E label. The JANUS Jury selects projects that emphasize innovative use and respect for the user and the environment.

the Conservatory

The mission of the Conservatoire du Design et de la Marque I Centre National des Archives du design à la française is to archive, publish and exhibit the history of design and creative entrepreneurs. To broaden its audience among the general public, professionals and research circles, the Institute produces exhibitions that promote and disseminate a culture of innovation and creativity.

To encourage student designers to ask questions about tomorrow's world, IFD organizes the following projects
forward-looking research, with the help of photographs EXPLORE l Outside the box (8 competitions held since 2016), (designing new ways of interacting with digital technology), and Invisible Cities the JANUS de l'Etudiant.
